Children & Divorce

It is inevitable that all children will be impacted by divorce and the restructuring of the family. It is one of the most painful and agonizing experiences that children can encounter. Because each child will handle grief in his own way, it is imperative that you be aware of the signs indicating that your child might be having more than normal adjustment problems.

  • Shows no emotion
  • Persistent blame or grief
  • Aggressive or destructive outbursts
  • Depression
  • Suicidal thoughts or actions
  • Unwillingness to speak about the divorce or the absent parent
  • Prolonged dysfunction in school
  • Always assuming a care giving role
  • Pretending to be the "perfect" child
  • Accident proneness
  • Stealing or other illegal acts
  • Signs of addictive behaviors (food, drugs, etc.)
